    I would like to know how someone can file taxes under your name and social security number

    I filed my taxes for this year and a month later i got a call and was told that i already filed for this year after contacting the IRS they told me i was a victim of identity theft

    Well, you have your answer. You did not safeguard your personal information and someone used it to file their taxes. Get a lawyer and get your name cleared of any debts that are not yours.  This is a long process and can be a major headache. I do not envy you. Good luck.

    Yes but deciding for what purpose will aid in the solution . First someone needs to hide and have a job ssn is required so they use yours .Then they file and get their refund back on your number for the taxes they payed . Second some one has stolen your identity out right and has taken your rightful refund . Identity theft is a category where they put all crap and misdeeds people do that's complicated and hard to figure out . Sort of a giant circular file (Trash Can ) Mostly they leave it to you to figure out . Best to find a tax pro to figure this out .

    Find someone who specializes in this.   It will shorten the process.    Don't just pick ANY lawyer.
