I think the point nowadays is to keep track of who has what and where.  
Also, just a thought in my own suspicious mind.....if everyone wanted all their cash, I don't think there is enough. When money is printed, only the amount purchased from the Federal Reserve is forthcoming.  The interest has no paper with which it could be paid.
There isn't enough money to pay the bills! Just like in our real lives!
