The standard deduction and exemption for a single person is $9500 ($5800 + $3700). If your income is less than that, you don't need to file, but if you have any withholding, you can get that refunded. Also, if you have children, or are between the ages of 25 and 65, you may be entitled to Earned Income Credits. There are caps for eligibility based on income and number of children.
