Alternate text is a short phrase used to describe an image on a webpage or in an email message. When alternate text is added, a popup of the text appears when you rest your mouse on the image. You'll see the text when an image is not visible on your page or when it's disabled or unavailable. You can add it to an image in Microsoft Word.
