    SUM is the subject of the sentence and SHAPES is the predicate.
    "The" would act as an "adjective". 
    "of our total childhood trials and victories" is a prepositional phrase describing "sum"
    "rest" is the object of the predicate (what is shaped)
    "the, again, is like an adjective for "rest"
    "of our lives" is another prepositional phrase, this one describing "rest".

    Totally agree.

    Its a tree with only one branch which grows and constantly changes direction in response to the multitude of  input data from exposure the life outside the womb.
