People give up something for Lent,  something they enjoy, something they like or take  pleasure in,   and this self denial is a constant reminder of the meaning of the Holy Week.

I gave up sex but my wife didn't know it.  When she became romantic I had to tell her that ITS LENT.  She wanted to know who its lent to and for how long.

Lent also known as Cuaresma or Quadragesima (Latin: Forty[1]) is the Christian observance of the liturgical year from Ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday.

The traditional purpose of Lent is the penitential preparation of the believer – through prayer, penance, repentance, almsgiving and self-denial. Its institutional purpose is heightened in the annual commemoration of Holy Week, marking the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events of the Passion of Christ on Good Friday which then culminates in Easter Sunday, marking the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lent
