      It is caused by the cracking and shifting of the plates of rock that make up the plates layered crust. As shifting plates suddently slide pass one another vibrations in the for of waves are released.  That is just brief history.

        There not form! they occur on a regular basic as the Earth core melt under the continental plate shifting resulting in earthquakes& volcanoes.
