What do kangaroos eat? That depends — there are many different kinds of kangaroos, and kangaroo habitat varies accordingly. Some live up in trees, some in the desert, others occupy open grasslands. The major dietary difference is between tree kangaroos and terrestrial kangaroos.
In both tree kangaroos and terrestrial kangaroos, the stomach is large, containing zymotic bacteria capable of breaking down tough fibrous food. The digestive process is similar to what goes on in a cow's stomach, although the anatomy differs. But terrestrial kangaroos apply their high-power digestion tools to grass primarily, while leaves and fruit are the main foods of tree kangaroos. Also, tree kangaroos have a broader diet that may include bark, sap, and flowers. When they can get them, they eat eggs, birds, and other small animals, too. Terrestrial kangaroos are strict vegetarians.
Three general types of terrestrial kangaroos are recognized, wallabies, wallaroos, and ordinary kangaroos. In terms of weight, wallaroos are about the same size as ordinary kangaroos, but they are stouter and shorter. Wallabies are generally smaller than either wallabies or ordinary kangaroos.

Tree kangaroos, as their name indicates, spend most of their time in trees, but they also come down to the ground from time to time to feed. Like terrestrial kangaroos, they have strong hind legs and long, narrow feet, but they have longer tails. Their stronger forelegs, longer claws, and rubbery soles allow them to get a good grip on trees.
Most terrestrial kangaroos drink very little water. They can get most of the water they need by eating green plants. Red kangaroos can go without water for two or three months (red kangaroo habitat is generally quite xeric). The tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii) is able to live even off saltwater. It is a common practise in western Queensland to sneak up on kangaroos that are drinking from a bore drain (a earth drain that carries water to stock. The water comes from a bore that taps into the underground Great Artesian Basin)
I personaly , not being one to boast, shot two kangaross with the one shot from a 308 rifle.
There were 8 roos lined up drinking from a bore drain and I took the first one with a kill shot and the round went through the first in line and brought down the second in line.I finished it off with a .22 to the head at point blank range the original shot was about 150 yds.
The most common roo is the Eastern grey and the largest is the western red. Those suckers reach 7ft and more.
Kangaroos can go for long periods with out water and they can sense it is going to rain from miles away and head for the rain to be area in large mobs.
Another fascinating thing is that a female roo that is pregnant, this true as I live, can "pause" her pregnancy in time of drought and in 6 mths a years time when the drought breaks the pregnancy recommencefrom where it was paused.
A baby kangaroo, called a joey, is only a tiny wee thing about the size of a baby mouse.
It leaves the birth canal and works its` way up through mums fur and into the pouch on mums tummy.
There it latches on to a teat, there are two, and the teat expands and holds the baby firmly so the joey cannot let go.The teat pumps milk into the joey at a predetermined rate.
Absolutely fantastic animal.
Their main food is grass, or the farmers crops, and also young gum tips.
There heaps of different roo types as you said. There are little rock wallabies about the size of a adult cat, gorgeous little blokes that let you within a couple of feet in the wilds on central Australia. A pademelon is a larger wallaby and has a black band down its` back.
Sorry I will shut up, just love the diversity of this country, never tire of it.
OH! I was culling kangaroos for a sheep station owner who had more roos than sheep on his 35thousand acre property. This was about ten years ago.
