Dense smoke can be compared to thick fog- both limit your visibility severely. If you can only see one car length in front of you and you are driving 60mph and there is a car 2 car lengths ahead of you driving 40mph you will not have enough breaking time to stop your car once you see that car and will smash right into that car. The cars behind you won't see the accident in time to stop and bang into both of you etc. Both can be so thick that you cant see your hand with an outstretched arm! Thus the multi car accidents in Florida.
