It means not having the chemical or biological ability to react with other substances or fire. In general terms it would mean something un-reactive. An example of something inert would be Argon gas, as it is unable to sustain a flame, and does not react with metal in a molten state, being capable of forming a protective envelope during an electrically induced welding process.

It' s a bit ike "inept", meaning useless, however "inert", is only a trait in a person that peeeeeeeeeeeeees you off personally, I think....
