A GANG of travelling thieves rammed a lorry into a BT yard and drove off with £25,000 of copper cabling.
CCTV images from the raid in Ayr were sent to police UK-wide, which led to police in Doncaster identifying Michael Dear, 36, and Tommy Lee Smith, 30, as members of the gang.
The pair's lawyers struck a deal with prosecutors to admit a reduced charge of forcing open the BT yard in March last year.
Both men told Ayr Sheriff Court that they were not involved in the actual theft.
The gang reversed their lorry at speed into the gates and stole the metal.
Smith, of Blackpool, was jailed for a year while horse trainer Dear, of Doncaster, was given 200 hours community service.
The raid on the depot has prompted BT's security chief Luke Beeson to call for stricter regulations for scrap metal dealers in a bid to stop the "copper criminals", who cost British industry around £770million a year.
The thefts are fuelled by huge increases in the price of metals. The price of copper has risen threefold since 2009.
Mr Beeson said: "Elimination of the market for stolen metal is critical in the fight against cable theft. Tighter regulation is required."
