      American Football Evolved out of Rugby Football, and so is another variation on the game of Association Football, and the American Variation of Football, Therefore American Football.

        Most of the major American "football" games are played in a bowl (Sugar bowl, Rose bowl, Orange bowl),  and I suspect that is because of the shape of most football stadiums. As far as the "foot" part, I see your point. A rose by any other name .....
