      There mainly for show,  a good rider  and horse  don't need them, some horses may need a tickle to  make them  move out fast.   I think there cruel and should be banned from use. I have ridden many horses and at  no time ever  wanted  or needed to use spurs .

        It shows the fans and judges that you are not attempting to claim the horse down so you can stay on longer and win the prize money.
