Plasma is the least expensive to purchase and supposedly relfects more light if there is a nearby window to interfere with viewing. On the other hand, LCD is less affected by light of nearby windows, and has a relatively decent picture. LED is the latest, and the most economical to run, with a picture similar to LCD.
I'd check out a showroom, and see firsthand what I preferred though. One of the most important things though, is making sure you purchase one with 1080 PI (pixels per square inch) for highest definition. The 1080 PI really makes a huge difference when receiving a high definition signal, or being used with a blu ray player. Shortly after we purchased a 1080 PI plasma, I purchased a blu ray player, to fully utilize the potential of the television. I never regretted doing that, as I was totally amazed at how it made a picture stand out. If you enjoy watching movies, I'd also consider a home theater sound unit, as along with an enhanced picture, blu ray also gives you some of the best sound on the market. How the sound of something like a train going by shifts through the speakers really adds a whole level to the viewing experience.
Myself, I'd go with a big screen, that was big, but not too overwhelming for the size room it was being put in. That way you get to fully experience the quality of what you are paying for. The good thing of TV's today is, that you can wall mount them and eliminate some furniture also. Hope this helps. They are a little of a process to set up, but you'll appreciate your efforts, once you are done.
