My daughter has just bought a home in California which has an orange tree and a lime tree. Many of the oranges are on the ground and have bites taken from them. The ones on the tree are still sour. Should she pick them and will they ripen in the house? The lime tree fruit seems to be fine. Are there things she should do to protect these trees and their fruit in the future? We don't know much about citrus growing.

The pruning of citrus should be done to open up the centre area of the tree, this allows the sunlight into the inner branches and assure good production.
As far as the sourness as I am not familiar with US conditions I suggest you check out your local citrus experts. May need good feed of fertiliser which should be spread just out fron the trunk and lightly raked into top soill.
The best "Citrus Fertiliser" should be readily available for your local codition.
My brother was a commercial citrus grower in Australia and I would ask his advise except he is dead. Oh well can`t win em all.

I have a lime (or is it lemon) tree in the front yard. Maybe that tree grows Liemons. Everybody says "You should pick those <things> and make lemonaid or pie" I don't want to. All the lemon I need is to squeeze on fish. I always offer the fruit to these people. Nobody wants it. Nobody.
Flip: You grew up on a farm and no doubt know where eggs come from...and worse. Much worse.
