      Because of the bishop's canonicol robes. Other cultures have Santa in gray or green depending on the folklore and pagan ideaology of the area.

          Santa claus "we know" is officialy created by Coca Cola, and the red suit simbolizes the production color of coca cola, thats why he wears that =]
