One flea lays 1000 eggs a day. Flea eggs can lay dormant for up to 9 years by the last estimation. The cheapest and most effective way to rid your life of fleas is...
Bathe the animal with a shampoo product that has a two week residual ... which means the product will continue to kill the fleas for up to two weeks. When bathing your pet put a ring of shampoo around the neck first because if you begin with the back end as people tend to do the fleas will run to the head and you are hooped.
Once the pet is dry apply the drops (a molecular creeping product)... those drops render the female flea infertile. Woot!
You have to take care of the house as well... remember those fleas are going to lay eggs in places that won't be disturbed.
Vacuum the house and throw the vacuum bag far far away. Spray the house with a product that kills fleas... don't forget the couch, under the couch, base boards the works...closets ... Fleas are sneaky. Wash the pet's bedding.
Even if the spray product says "Only do this once" ... don't listen ... wait 2 weeks and do it again.
This is by far the cheapest way. I also use citrus based products to clean my house. Citrus is a natural repellent.
Good Luck.
