      In the western cultures, yes.

        When you marry (here in the states), you can change your name to each others name, one name or to 1234 if you want. It's a time to legally change your name.........

          You have to go through the legal proceedure to accompish the name change.  It isn't automatic if you simply choose to  make the change.
