You are confused, the US has not bought ANY oil from Iran since the overthrow of the Shaw and the sacking and takeover of the US Embassy, back in the seventies
What has happened is the Congress has passed and the President has signed, a law the requires the US to no longer do business with ANY county the does business with the Bank of Iran, which is the government of Iran.
That means if a county buys oil from Iran, they can no longer sell their products in the US and the US is by far the worlds largest consumer and producer of goods and services.
There is a catch however. The President is granted the authority, in that bill, to give counties six months to stop doing business with Iran, or to negate the laws requirements, in the name of National Defense
