I assume by "starter box" you mean cable box??? Run a cable from the cable box to the input of the DVR. Run another cable from the output of the DVR to the TV. The type of cables you use depends on the connectors you have on the DVR and the TV.

the HD cable stater box has 5 wires, my DVR on has three in plug-ins
