According to the play my kids were in during their kindergarten years (each one had the male lead role of Wise Old Owl), The Riddle Red Hen, the reason the chicken crossed the road was to get to her mother's side.
So, there you have it....straight from Terry School kindergarten: The chicken crossed the road to get to her mother's side.  
Interestingly enough, country bumpkin will be shocked to learn the chickens were naked!!!
