Any car mechanics here that wish to give their expertise?

Nissan Sentra (2002): Check engine light has been on for a few months. Code indicates an oxygen sensor which my local mechanic replaced (twice) but didn't solve problem. Went to Nissan dealer who said the code indicated the sensor, but that the problem was the engine control module. I ordered and paid for ECM and had an appointment to replace it today. Three days ago the battery (which was very old) died, so I replaced it. Yesterday the check engine light went out and I have driven it about 100 miles since. Previously, the light had come on within 1 mile after it had been reset. Any thoughts?

Hoping I can pay a restocking fee and get some of my cost of the ECM back....

That seems to be a big leap if not a guess to go from an oxygen sensor code then say it is a engine control module. If we are guessing I would say that the oxygen sensor did not have the required power that it needed to work right and after you replaced the battery it was there. Meaning your engine was drawing more power from your alternator in order to run and the sensor was not getting enough.

Thanks Ed. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place because the state inspection is due this month. I'm going to postpone replacing the ECM and go to my local mechanic to get it inspected tomorrow. Then if light stays off, I will attempt to get my money back on the ECM. Have spent far too much on this car this month.

Keep in mind that you have been working your alternator very hard with an older battery. Keep an eye open for the check battery light. If you seen it come on and off a few times you know it is going to be time to replace that alternator. They also have been known to make other indicator lights come on in that the engine dies very briefly and then starts again.
    Best wishes and luck.

Computers aren't perfect i went through the same problem with a buick ,one way to fix this( dosen't mean it will work for you) is to disconnect the battery again and hold the positive and negative leads together for 2 minutes this will clear the computer, it's worth a try and does no damage..

Thanks Daren. After replacing the battery, the light did come back on (immediately) but I didn't short the terminals together. Sometime in the next two days the light went out and is still out. Going to get my "re-inspection" tomorrow am. Called Nissan and they do have a restocking policy on the ECM. Maybe it's not all gloom and doom after all!

hopefully you'll pass the emisions they add so much crap to the cars today it makes you feel like a criminal just to get an inspection sicker.

Here are some problems that are more likely with Ecm

Problem With Nissan Sentra 2002 GXE?

I currently own a Nissan Sentra 2002 GXE with 62K Miles on it.

Recently I have certain issues with it.The Engine Starts to Rev Up ( Accelerate) Even In Park Mode and in Drive Mode with brake being applied.Twice this has caused 'Service Engine soon' 'Check Battery' 'Check Oil Pressure" indicators to come up and the engine stalled.

I feel sometimes the accelarator is not disengaged properly or feel like it is stuck up.

ahh the sentra is a ecu killer ..i would recommend taking it to the dealership cause if the ecu has failed than it "could" be covered under a emissions defect warranty also Nissan technicians are the most qualified to resolve abnormal drivablity issues ....

By replacing your battery you've reset your ECM. Prior to taking your vehicle to a mechanic in the future for an idiot light on the dash, disconnect the battery cables and hold them together for 15 seconds. This usually resets the computer. Your computer runs on milliamps (not 12 volts). Extreme care must be taken when checking the unit so as not to burn it out. If you've replaced the radio or added any other electrical components using "Unshielded wires" this will also cause electrical problems (bad signal to the ECM). Most store will not refund electrical items. Good luck.

Thanks Ed. I had disconnected the battery a few times, but was not aware of the shorting of the cables. My local mechanic had also reset the code about three times. I have not yet taken possession of the ECM but had to pay for it in advance. Was told this morning that the Nissan Dealer did have a restocking policy so after making sure it passes inspection, I will request a partial refund for the part.

15% is what they charge. Accept no less than that.
