            I worked with an  hermaphrodite , I didn't know for years, he chose to take the male gender and had not yet had gender reassignment surgery, I thought that was strange enough but he was living with a female friend of mine (also a work colleague) what puzzled me is, does that make her gay? (he still was physically both female and male) ended up she left him for another bloke and he found another girl,

                hermaphrodite is the proper term. Aphrodite isn't a complete pronounciation of the word.
