    On drywall/rocksheet   this depends on the size of the crack.  sometimes a small amt of putty scraped into the crack and then gently sanded can work. If the crack is long (a seam crack) you may need to fill and then re-tape the crack...a good and knowlegable hardware store or some one knowlegable at a big store ( home depot/ lowes) can guide you on how to do this.  I imagine there are directions on line too.  For plaster, tile, cement, and brick cracks you will need good directions!!!
