    (6a^4 + 6a^3 + 5a^2) / 6a^3
You must first do as much calculating of the parenthesized numbers.
I have to give  'a'  some kind of value (It is just easier for me that way.)  I'm going to give  "a"  the value of 5. Then I can get to work.
    6(5)^4 = 6(5x5x5x5) = 6(625) = 3750
    6(5)^3 = 6(5x5x5) = 6(125) = 750
    5(5)^2 = 5(5x5) = 5(25) = 125
    3750 + 750 + 125 =  4625
    4625 / 6(5)^3  = 4625 / 6(5x5x5) =  4625 / 6(125) = 4625 / 750 = 6.166...
    3750/750 = 5    750/750 = 1  625/750 = .83333  (That's how Eggplant's problem would have looked if she'd used "5" for "a").     5   +   1    +  .167 (which is 1/6)  =  6.1666  =  a  +  1  +  1/6
Our answers are a little different and I'm not really sure which is correct.  NOTE:  I have the correction expression, changing it after eggplant pointed out my mistake.

The reason why your answer is different is as follows:
Step 3 in the calculation has the following:
    5(5)^3 = 5(5x5x5) = 5(125) = 625
This is wrong as the power in the problem for this step is 2 (not 3). I suppose that this is a careless mistake.
Also, it is not necessary to assume any values for "a", as this problem can be solved easily using basic algebra instead of using arithmatic.

I assume that you have typed the problem correctly without any typing mistakes and you would like to simplify this expression to a simple expression.

    (6a^4+6a^3+5a^2)/6a^3

Divide each item in the brackets by 6a^3

    (6a^4+6a^3+5a^2)/6a^3  =  6a^4/6a^3 + 6a^3/6a^3 + 5a^2/6a^3  =  a + 1 + (5/6a)

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this problem.

Thank you, eggplant. When I fixed that error (yes, careless), we get the same answer! I use a value because it is too hard for me with an unknown. I barely passed algebra and never took another math class after that....1967 (geometry doesn't count). I am flabbergasted to have matched the answer. Thanks for your help.
