    1. Consult the owner's manual for your dishwasher model to find out if there are any special precautions or instructions to safely access the heating element. Remove one or both dishwasher racks so you will be able to reach the heating element. Some dishwasher's have upper rack rails with end clips that must be released to remove the rack.


    2. Pour the lemon juice in a small shallow bowl and swirl the liquid with an old toothbrush.

    3. Reach inside the dishwasher and scrub the heating element with the lemon juice soaked toothbrush. Return the brush to the bowl to keep it wet until the entire heating element has been scrubbed clean. Thick scale deposits may require a second pass with the lemon juice.

    4. Wipe the length of the heating element with a damp sponge to remove the deposits loosened by the lemon juice.
