    It is a valve-like devise in the coolant system that opens and closes to keep the water at a hot (but safe) temperature.

    It closes the coolant in the engine block off from the coolant in the radiator to allow the engine to reach operating temperature as quickly as possible to allow the engine to operate at optimum temperature and therefore be efficient 85 degree 's C, I , believe it opens as this is the optimum temperature although it may differ due to Summer and Winter thermostat settings and being presurised the coolant can reach temperatures in excess of 120 degrees C I think don't take it as Gospel
