Sisal comes from a kind of Agave plant. It's leaves are broad shaped and is used to make cordage (which is rope) and is a very strong fiber. It is also used to weave into material to make rugs because of it's durability. A Sisal rug will last years and is recomended for use at beach cottages. These rugs have been around for years before the decorating community made them famous. If you have access to a Maritime Museum in your area they might possibly have an exhibit that encludes the process of rope making, which will also include rope made from hemp.
