Fluid retention would be my guess but see your GP for a definitive answer.

Swollen ankles and swollen feet are common and usually not cause for concern, particularly if you have been standing or walking a lot. But feet and ankles that stay swollen or are accompanied by other symptoms could signal a serious health problem. WebMD looks at some possible causes of foot and ankle swelling and offers advice on when to call the doctor.

    Go to......http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/swollen-ankles-and-feet, for more information.

Try sleeping with a pillow under your ankles at night for some relief.... That helps fluid retention.......

congestive heart failure is what causes edema ( water retention in the tissues ) . But if taking the proper medication, one can live for years with CHF . My mother did.
