Linux is an operating system, much like Windows, and has many versions which (unlike Windows) are free. Probably the most popular is Ubuntu, which I use on an old laptop that I resurrected. It will do pretty much anything Windows will do with a few exceptions. One big advantage is it does not have much problem with virus and malware so you don't need virus protection. Many techs use it as a portable troubleshooting program.
