it comes from trees its the sap as Eggie has said chewing gum comes from it as well i think thats called gawa gum and alot of foods products come from it as well

Chewing gum, came from the South American Indians. They got it from the sap or resin of trees. Chewing gum is the oldest candy in the world. It has existed for at least 5000 years.

Many years ago, archaeologists made a surprising discovery! It seems prehistoric men and women chewed on lumps of tree resin for pure enjoyment, making them the first-ever gum chewers in recorded history. The study of man has also found that almost every culture chomped "gum." Ancient Greeks routinely gnawed on tree resin to clean their teeth and freshen their breath, and called their treat "mastiche." Indians chawed on the sap from trees. The Maya Indians of Central America gummed chicle. Early settlers bit into hardened tree sap and beeswax.

    Very interesting link, eggplant!

Found this bit of info from wikipedia...Chewing gum is a type of gum traditionally made of chicle, a natural latex product, or synthetic rubber known as polyisobutylene. For economical and quality reasons, many modern chewing gums use rubber instead of chicle. Chicle is nonetheless still the base of choice for some regional markets, such as Japan.

I have chewed gum in the past and I will do so no more. Sounds like poison to me.

Weather or not it is seems like in the end it tastes like it is..

Here's something I found. Since I gave up all artificial sweeteners I set out to find a chewing gum that does not use them. The only one I can find is Chiclets, and owing to it's name thought that it waas made of chicle, the natural latex - but looking at the label just now, they list "gum base," whatever that is as their second ingredient to sugar. Hmmn.

OKAY, I looked it up "Gum base is the basic ingredient in the manufacture of chewing gum. A nonreactive, nondigestible substance that is highly elastic and not water soluble, gum base used to be made of natural ingredients like chicle, spruce, mastic, paraffin wax and beeswax. With technology today, most gum base is made from synthetic materials to create the desired elasticity for chewing gum."

In other words, gum chewers are chewing on chemicals.
