I was interisted in purchasing a guitar. I was advised that the one I was looking at was very hard to play and was extreemly hard on the fingers. What would cause this condition and how could I detect this problem in other guitars I may look at.

If I were a beginner, I wouldn't purchase an expensive guitar at first. However, you get what you pay for. A cheap guitar will discourage you, as it will be tougher to learn chords when you have to press harder on the frets. An electric guitar is fun to start with, but you could also get a cheaper acoustic with nylon strings. Look for a second hand one and press down on the strings "one at a time " and move up the frets towards the top to see if it rattles the string. If it doesn't seem to hard and doesn't buzz the string. Try it out. Usually a Gibson, Fender, or Yamaha's are reasonable to begin with. Check out a music store.

Practice regularly and after a period of time, say 3-4 weeks , your fingertips will become hardened and thereafter you can play any fretted instrument.

i wouldn't frett it eventually this condition will go away..

ask the people qt the store, try it out for a few minutes. i am not a guitar player so i imgine it would hurt if your not used to it.
