From what I saw in another thread, ancient Christians who held a festival celebrating the dead. Must be true since a Christian posted it complete with a bible verse or a verse of some sort.

And this is centuries old, am I right? It's just progressed over the many, many years. It used to be quite gruesome I think....
Yes, centuries old but that's what started the whole idea according to the post. It evolved to witches and ghosts and stuff in time. Now it's just fun. :)
