Should the President of the USA be allowed to assassinate American citizens?

It was first reported in January of last year that the Obama administration had compiled a hit list of American citizens whom the President had ordered assassinated without any due process, and one of those Americans was Anwar al-Awlaki. No effort was made to indict him for any crimes (despite a report last October that the Obama administration was "considering" indicting him). Despite substantial doubt among Yemen experts about whether he even has any operational role in Al Qaeda, no evidence (as opposed to unverified government accusations) was presented of his guilt. When Awlaki's father sought a court order barring Obama from killing his son, the DOJ argued, among other things, that such decisions were "state secrets" and thus beyond the scrutiny of the courts. He was simply ordered killed by the President: his judge, jury and executioner.

Anwar al-Awlaki was NOT an American citizen. He was a traitor to the country he was born in and plotted to attack.

Anwar al-Awlaki was a traitor to America. He was the new leader of Al Qaeda no matter what the "Yemen experts" want to claim. Traitors get executed. Another one gone.

Now I'm out of here til tomorrow. I just had to respond to this.

Traitors may well deserve execution, once they have been proven in a court of law to be a traitor. But without due process, perhaps it is as well that you are not the President with such terminal power. And me too.

This was not an execution of course. My post was about assasination. Perhaps you could respond to the question rather than invent a strawman of your own.

I didn't realize you were class teacher. You're a kick with your condescending attitude all the time. Are you a member of yahoo discussions where people treat each other like yesterdays garbage all the time? You're really rather miserable, did you know that? I will respond any ol way I want to. You are echoing someone elses invented truth. This does not make you right. Listen to the voices on the internet, not the controlled media, you'll be further ahead in these matters. He was a proven traitor whether you want to believe it or not. The fact that Al Qaeda had threatened retaliation proves he was one of them. I'd rather not have to pay the cost of a trial for a traitor. The US government has been secretly killing off people for centuries. Where have you been? Oh and Anwar became an x-American the minute he turned traitor. He lost all American rights at that point. You want to hand hold traitors, fine. Don't expect me to do the same. Execution, assassination, same, same. They both equal DEAD.

    Are you American?
    ONIHR777

colleen so do innocent people without fair representation.

Colleen, you are exactly right. This guy was a traitor and someone that planned the killing of large numbers of innocent people and remained hidden by entire populations and countries. This wasn't someone that we could just waltz in and pick up for indictment. This was someone that had to be stopped. When terrorist took their operations worldwide on such a large scale they initiated a whole new set of rules and it was George Bush that first ordered the assination of terrorist whether foreign or American and I think that Obama is doing the right thing in following this process. There is a difference between an American citizen involved in a crime here and terrorist out in the world and to suggest that this somehow equates with the president just going after people that commit crimes is specious nonsense.

No ONHR777, just traitors who plan to kill the innocent people of their birth country. They have the chance to represent themselves by their actions to show their innocence. His actions screamed guilty.

if this is such a secret, how did you find out?

    amfortas

Secrets have a way of becoming known but it does require us to keep our ears to the ground. How did I find out? I keep my ears and eyes open.

You listened to the media, this is not "underground stuff". This is propaganda trying to get the people upset that their president murdered an American who was NOT an American. He gave up that right when he turned traitor.

Covertly, i would say it has been going on for years, you only know what they want you to know.

It is true carmaxable, I just read about it on  CBS News.  This is my opinion:

There is no difference in the assassination of this man (and 2 others linked with Al Qaeda),  than the assassination of Osama Bin Laden.  If they had been brought to trial, they would have just rotted away in a max security prison.  No justice there.

How can you figure anything out with American politics? The man has incredible power in the office of president.I Doubt that he can order someone killed without recourse.

Oh, it's already been said that there will be retaliation. It frightens me. Anwar al-Awlaki was linked to the underwear bomber and other stuff too.

Yes, he should kill them all, but he should start with himself first.

    Dollybird

eggplant, If he started with himself first, then how would he kill the rest of them.!

Absolutely, and you need to get real. Al-awlaki was a terrorist and getting evidence on him to bring him to justice in an american court is wishful thinking. He is a traitor and he has to be here to be indicted. I don't feel an ounce of sympathy for him and nothing but disgust for someone trying to make it seem as if an injustice has been done. If someone is killing people or injuring people then the authorities capture him, but if that is impossible then they kill him. Al-awlaki was a terrorist that planned the killing of large numbers of innocents and got just what he deserved.

    Dollybird

bigben, when you wrote, Absolutely, does that mean you agree with, eggplant, starting with himself first, then how would he kill rest of them.!
    eggplant

Hee, hee, it was a joke. I guess you didn't get it Dollybird. If he's dead first, then it's obvious that he can't harm anyone else.

What I'm saying is that, yes, it's best to let justice take it's course and that is what civilized countries do. But, with the path that terrorism has taken and the degree of power that they are able to exert in the killing of inncents, it has come to the point where a new set of rules is in order and most of the advanced countries probably feel the same way. These are not people that are just somewhat difficult to apprehend. They are almost impossible to catch. And as far as innocent until provent guilty, well, most of the accused get on TV or the internet and brag about their exploits. No, I have no sympathy for them or concern that justice has somehow been diminished, because I think that to feel like that is absurd. I'm a moderate liberal and as such am a strong beliver in justice. Hell, I don't even believe in the death penalty, but as a moderate, I'm also a pragmatist, and I see the current gathering of information and then acting upon it to be practical in the extreme. Just remember, sometimes violent acts require violent solutions or more innocent people pay the price.

I am not American either. In fact over 95% of people in the world aren't. But the issue is about due process.

There is no due process when the person is a known terrorist that refuses to give up and see his day in court. How pray tell do you suppose we were to capture him and bring him to court? Would you have cried kidnapping is against the law then? He got his due process and the USA just made the world a little safer.
    bigben

The issue is about due process? That is the most absurd nonsense I've ever read. These people have no respect for the life and limb of others. They kill large groups of people in an indiscriminant manner. There is no talking or reasoning with them, there is just the taking of innocent life. Even in the most civilized country when someone becomes a serious threat to the life and safty of others justice requires immediate action. Also, they try to capture these criminals, but it is extremely difficult and just how many lives are YOU willing to sacrifice in order to indict them?
    amfortas

Bigpen, sir. I understand your point and agree that the wicked deserve the consequences. But in such a case as this due process is essential. We are not told what evidence exists because someone (not you, not me, in fact no-one knows who) says it is a State secret. That's what they used to say in the USSR. We do not even know who the accused is. I am sure that you do not know him.

What if 'someone' decided that you were a terrorist?

When America had its Revolution it was to do away with 'Star Chambers' where faceless people could accuse another and have them executed without ever having to show due process.

Monarchs had ultimate power. America was formed on the basis of all men being equal and all men being innocent until proven guilty. You do not even know who this man was let alone what he has done, apart from what some faceless bureaucrat says. Is this what you voted for?

There is no need to on american soil, but off , hell yes, twice center mass for a muslim terrorist. The reason is that no terrorist is safe anywhere in the world as an enemy of USA. Dont get weak on this people , its about your safety. American or not. I absolutely hate obama ideals, but he is strong about this

what if you were deemed to be a terrorist without due process THIS IS THE POINT PEOPLE. or you colleen would not get to disagree with obama care

Sorry, you're trying to claim he was an American who was denied due process afforded to AMERICANS. He gave up his American rights when he became the leader of Al Qaeda and planned the killing of innocent civilians. He was a traitor. Traitors get shot or in this case blown to kingdom come.
    bigben

I don't know about Colleen, but if I became a terrorist that ran an organization as large as Al Queda I would have to assume that beiing a traitor and a mass murdering lunatic, I would be beyond the right of due process.

new law 50 yrs. in penn for disagreeing with obama healhcare to be passed in congress monday.

Where did you get the rhetoric?

I am not on yahoo answers, Colleen.  I am not a classroom teacher.  I am not a miserable person unsually. Why is it necessary for you to be so rude?  I even agreed with you that were I a president I just might have the same attitude as you do, and thanked my stars that neither of us are. I remain fortunate that I live in a country where the Head of State does not ride roughshod over a man's /woman's right to be considered innocent (even if found with a gun in their hand standing over the body) until proven guilty in a Court. Now, please be nice.

I was coming off your rudeness. The media is blowing this out of proportion and you people are falling for it like good little drones. This is no different than what we did to Bin Laden and people around the world cheered because the media told them to. Now the media calls Obama a killer and tells the people to scream "unfair!" and the good little puppets do. You people scare me more than Obama does.

think about it anyway he was a terrorist rapper and magazine editor for christ sake when did this dude hide out . between albums and photo shoots. bin laden took a shit in the dark. hope all you legal right americans have neon toilet paper.
