      The Global Positioning System was invented by the US Department of Defense.

        GPS was advanced based on the Loran Navigational system which used land based transmitters to provide accurate positioning. DOD was unsure what to call it and were about to call it “Sky Net” when it was found that the term had already been copyrighted.
