Some states do have a recycling program when you turn in your cans or bottles they give you a nickle per item. But you do pay that cost up front in the first place. Here in Ohio you have to scrap them to get money and that price changes almost daily. A normal range is40 to 60 cents per pound for aluminum.

Where I live the deposit value is 5 cents and the recycling fee is 2 cents... giving you 3 cents upon return. 80% of aluminium cans are returned and back on the shelves in new form within six weeks.
I just learned that so I thought I would share!
