      According to Obama there are 47, but in reality, there are actually 50 with the addition of annexed Puerto Rico and Guam that have for their reason has not ventured into US statehood, however, the people do pay US taxes.

          Geographically speaking, there are 49 in North America. 


          Hawaii is not part of any continent. It is a group of islands about 2,700 kilometers from Brisbane, on the east coast of the Australian continent. Hawaii is considered to be part of the region of Oceania, which is also not a continent.
