The origin of the name hamburger: shredded beef was a common lower class food in Germany. In the German city of Hamburg it was called Hamburg steak. German immigrants from Hamburg to America brought food recipes along with them, and one of them was the Hamburg steak, which in the USA was referred to as Hamburger, due to its origin city and name.

The term "burger", can also be applied to the meat patty on its own, especially in the UK where the term "patty" is rarely used. The term may be prefixed with the type of meat as in "beef burger".
The term hamburger originally derives from Hamburg,[2] Germany's second largest city, from which many people emigrated to the United States.
