Cats get fat for the same reason that people do - eating too much and not getting enough exercise. Age and spaying/neutering also figure into the picture with older cats tending to gain more weight. You may want to consult with a vet on this, but I'd put the cat on a diet/exercise program.

Just stop feeding it so much, you are not doing the cat any favours by over feeding it, you will kill it with love if you are not careful.

1. don't leave out food for him / her all day long.   2.. take away his food at night, so he's not eating all night   3.  Let him out in the back yard to get exercise. But, don't let him / her out at night.

It is cruel to let your cat get so over weight, not good for cats heart. Im sure you can find information on line, how to help your cat loose weight.
