Prune sparingly. Magnolias don't grow particularly fastand overzealous pruning removes flower buds and destroys the natural tiered branching structure that's so visually interesting. According to "A-Z Encyclopedia of Garden Plants," evergreen magnolias are best pruned in late spring just prior to their flowering display. Prune deciduous magnolia trees in late summer to avoid excessive sap bleeding, or immediately after they bloom in early to mid spring.
