Late Symptoms of Hepatitis C: Summary
It is important to know that the hepatitis C virus, or HCV, can affect you much differently than it does someone else. For example, some people have very bad cirrhosis and late symptoms of hepatitis C after many years of having hepatitis C, while others have very few scars. Of the people who have the virus for 20 years, approximately 20 percent (1 out of 5 patients) will have severe scarring, or cirrhosis, in their liver. Once cirrhosis develops, the person is at risk for many life-threatening complications of hepatitis C liver disease.

The only effective treatment for people with end-stage liver disease is a liver transplant. Chronic hepatitis C virus is the most frequent cause of liver transplantation in the United States. Most people who receive a liver transplant for hepatitis C survive for at least five years after their transplant, but almost always, the hepatitis C virus returns.
If you're diagnosed with hepatitis C or end-stage liver disease, it's very important that you see a doctor who specializes in gastrointestinal diseases or liver diseases (hepatologist).
