Being you cant have a tag.. I would assume you put it in his name to get around something.... "clean hands" apply to this situation.. .If you have something to hide you dont have a leg to stand on.
If he has the title and the car is regestered to him... It is his.

Sounds to me like you are pretty much f****d!. If the title is in your no good friend's name then legally it is his unless you can prove otherwise either with receipts, witnesses, etc. You are espcially screwed if this person also has insurance on said vehicle....so....I know this is not any of my business....but why did you do this with a person you obviously have severed ties with for some reason and why is this friend claiming that you stole your own vehicle....something does not quite add up here!....(
