If you search the web for this question, you will see people up to 2009 quoting prices like $3000 for domestic US trips and $5000+ for foreign trips outside the US. It depends on which trip you go on. Like the Antarctica one is about $10,000 and one of the Australia ones was like $6,700.
An additional potential "cost" and concern is your child's safety. You will also find online that the People to People student ambassador program has had a major public relations failure after numerous complaints about neglect, including the case of a high school student who died. His parents sued the program and reached a settlement this year. The details are not pretty.
