When someone dies intestate (without a will), the decedent's estate goes into probate. The court actually gives relatives of the deceased a chance to be included in the disposition of the assets. The legal process may take a while longer than those that die testate. When there are no other uncles and aunts are left to claim, you, as cousins, could throw your names in the "hat" by petitioning to be included in the receiving of the assets. You would probably be required to make an announcement in the local newspaper to encourage all the relatives to come forward.
