It's something one is born with for the most part. During puberty some teens can become confused with the changes they go through but typically grow out of the confusion. Transgendered goes much deeper than a boy wanting to wear female clothing because he is more connected to his feminine side or a girl who acts like a tomboy because she falls more to her masculine side. Transgendered people are never comfortable in the body they were born with. Their mind and entire being are only focused on being the sex opposite of what their body is. This goes to their very Soul. They are a Soul who was born into the wrong body. It takes a lot of deep thinking to go through everything required to change ones sex. People do not do it on a whim or go through all the hell just to be different or play a joke. This is real to them. Real enough to go through surgery to have their physical body changed.  They are not mental or psychologically sick. They are just as sane as anyone else who is deemed sane. They are just looking to live their life as the sex they are meant to be so they can find happiness in this world too. Support your sister who may one day be your brother. Read up on the subject. See if there's a support group you and your family can join to educate yourselves on what your sister is going through.

Great answer Colleen. Puberty is confusing and having to choose the qualities to emulate as an adult with this dualistic perception of what is male and what is female led me to reject dualism completely and embrace both. Life calls for empathy and understanding without arcane limits.

thank you for all of the wonderful information! I understand somewhat more of what this whole transgender thing is and will be sure to support my sister as much a possible!

You're a good person. If she prefers to be known as a male however, you might want to ask her is she would prefer that you say brother instead of sister. Speak to her about it and respect her wishes. This is not easy for her either. ;)
