Remember! the substance which dissolve the another substance should have the high hydration energy than the lattice energy of a crystal [ like Nacl i.e. common salt]
If you do not understand, then I'm trying to explain it in simple word.
The inter-ionic force between Sodium ion & Chloride ion in Salt is easily get break up by the water, so salt dissolve in water
But the petrol cannot break the bond between sodium ion & chloride ion, so salt does not get dissolve in petrol.
