PLOT LINE. You are referring to the premise of a story (it could be a movie, play, musical, written or verbal)
The "line" is the general direction of the story, where the action is taking the characters.
For example: The plot line of "The Scarlet Letter" was basically the consequences of being an adulterer in the United States during its infancy. The sub plots were the relationships among the characters.
