Acid is an substance which gives hydrogen ion when dissolved in water.
For example, when HCl i.e. Hydrochloric acid when dissolve in water, it gives hydrogen ion and chloride ion. Since, it gives off hydrogen ion when dissolve in water, so it is an acid.
Similarly, when sulphuric acid is dissolved in water, it gives off hydrogen ion & sulphate ion, so it is also an acid.
Note: This is an classical definition given by Arrhenius & this definition works out only for the ionic compounds.
