The short answer is that Japan was building military strength in the 1930'w, with they goal of controlling the Asian Pacific, they invaded many islands and attacked China, this aggression was becoming a threat to all of asia in which we trade.  The USA supplied japan over 90% of its oil, when japan continued attacks, the USA place sanctions and stopped all exports to Japan, meanwhile, in Europe things were boiling over as well, japan signs an agreement with Germany and Italy.. The japanes got ticked off because we cut them off.. So, they attacked!
