the Alabama university football team is called crimson tide due to a game that took place in 1906 in a muddy field, and the score was a tide. The muddy conditions seemed to give the players the color crimson, so a sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald referred to the game as a crimson tide in the press. The name was heavily used by a sports editor of the Birmingham News, which is probably what popularized the it.
